Charlene Cuaresma is the current Hawaii AANCART Community Director and has served in leadership positions for nearly 40 years to address disparities in education, health, and social justice in the Filipino community. She is the past President of the Filipino Coalition for Solidarity, secretary of the National Federation of Filipino American Associations Region 12, and community liaison to the Hawaii State Legislature’s Filipino Caucus. Ms. Cuaresma has had significant administrative experience, having served as Medical Affairs Director for the American Cancer Society in Hawaii and Guam and partnership program coordinator for the NCI Cancer Information Service. Trained as a public health educator, she has tailored model NCI Cancer 101curriculum for the Filipino community; conducted training of trainers sessions with 35 participants; and implemented and evaluated Cancer 101 community forums that were presented on the islands of Oahu and Kauai. Ms. Cuaresma also served on the Hawai‘i Comprehensive Cancer Control Coalition to assist in the development of the cancer state plan and early detection component. Ms. Cuaresma has participated in the development, implementation and analysis of focus groups for Filipinos on breast and prostate cancers, and cancer treatment. Dr. Sy and Ms. Cuaresma have established a close working relationship since the inception of Hawaii AANCART Hawaii and through other public health community projects.
